SHILLONG, MAR 7: With the United Democratic Party (UDP) and Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) unlikely to field any candidate, Congress legislator Abu Taher Mondal is certain to be the next Speaker of the ninth Meghalaya assembly.
Election of the speaker will be held on Monday.
The UDP and HSPDP are unlikely to field any candidate for the coveted post and so is the decision of the NPP too.
Congress with 29 MLAs has already got the supported of two NCP and 11 other independents.
UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh told reporters that the decision to restrain from fielding a candidate in the speaker’s election is part of the tactical move. Asked to elaborate on the ‘tactical move’, Lyngdoh, however, refused to reveal citing the current political scenario.
Meanwhile, the UDP is part of the newly formed Meghalaya People’s Front (MPF). The MPF is a conglomeration of eight UDP, two NPP and two Independents legislators.
Meanwhile till filing of this report the HSPDP with four members and the lone GNC legislator has not made up the mind on the election of the Speaker.
The election to the post of deputy speaker will be take place later.
