Mischievous “smses” in Bangalore behind mass exodus of NE people

Shillong, August 16: Even as East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang has alerted people that one should not fall prey to mischievous and false “smses” being circulated about north eastern states students’ being attacked in Bangalore, Karnataka chief minister Jagadish Shettar has appealed to them not to leave the State.

During the meeting with the north eastern people, including students, in Bangalore on Thursday afternoon, Shettra assured them of providing security and requested them to stay back. There has been panic among the people belonging to the north eastern states staying in Bangalore, either to pursue their studies or work, following an attack on Tibetan who was stabbed as he was mistaken for a student from north east.

To add to their fear, smses have been circulated to the people in Karnataka that north east people and the students’ community will be attacked. The “smses,” which the police said was the handiwork of fanatics trying to foment communal violence, have literally stoke the mass exodus of people of north eastern region who left Bangalore in three  special Guwahati bound trains.

The root of the smses and the fear of the north east people being attacked in Bangalore emanates from the communal clash in Assam between the Bodos and migrant Bangladeshis. Immediately after the communal carnage in Assam, some of the students from north east studying in Pune were attacked, followed by the attack on the Tibetan student.

The “mischievous smses” was clearly aimed at aggravating the already tense situation wherever the people of north east origin were staying. BJP leaders including its president Nitin Gadkhari and Sushma Swaraj have asked the Karnataka chief minister to ensure the safety of the people of north east origin. – By Our Reporter
