Shillong, Dec 1: Militants lobbed a grenade in Meghalaya Community & Rural Development (C&RD) minister Saleng A Sangma’s residence at Ringrey Gittim, Tura in West Garo hills district Saturday night which exploded and damaged a portion of the boundary wall and windows. Nobody is reportedly injured.
The incident took place at about 7 pm Saturday and the minister happens to be in Shillong. Police suspects that the grenade was lobbed by Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) militants. The attack, coming just in about few days after the ANVC (B) militants disrupt and accosted the former deputy chief minister and Meghalaya Congress working president Deborah Marak, has sent a shockwave both in political as well as government circle.
A GNLA cadre identified as June, who is said to be the close aide of Hadeo, Area Commander ka Dadenggre, has been arrested immediately. Police said that he was responsible for hurling the grenade in the minister’s residence.
The newly appointed Meghalaya DGP Kulbir Kishan said, “When the militant lobbed the grenade that exploded only the younger brother of the minister was present in the house. Fortunately, the minister is in Shilllong and nobody is hurt in the attack.”
According to the Kishan, the incident happen just a few hours after the police had conducted operations after receiving an advanced information about the militant outfit’s plan to lob bomb in the supermarket areas of Tura. He said, “As the militant group designed failed, the militants went and instead lobbed the grenade at the minister’s residence as there was heavy security presence in the market area.”
This is the second attacked on the Saleng Sangma. Last month, he narrowly escaped when the GNLA laid three IEDs on the road he was travelling in West Garo hills district.
Kishan said that operation to nab the militants has been intensified and additional security cover will be provided to the minister. Operations have been intensified in and around Tura. – By Our Reporter
