SHILLONG, AUG 5: Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of the West Jaintia Hills Regional Committee Sniawbhalang Dhar on Wednesday said Meghalaya is ready for border talks but is awaiting Assam to appoint its regional committee chairman.
“We are waiting for Assam to officially inform us who their chairman will be. Once they are appointed, I think we will meet,” Dhar said.
On Block I, he said both states are preparing reports.
“We are ready. Reports have to be submitted from both sides. I won’t say it is difficult, but areas of difference are always open for discussion,” he said.
Dhar added the issue has been referred to the joint committees of both governments, which will take the final call.
“We have sent this subject to the committees of both state governments. The committee is the authority to decide on border issues,” he said.
On the demand to retransfer Block I to Meghalaya, he said Meghalaya has nearly completed its homework.
“Our officers have almost completed all reports. We will first sit internally, then inform Assam. Once their committee is formed, both committees will meet and take a call,” Dhar said.
Asked about Khasi-Pnar dominated villages in the area, he said the data is with the Deputy Commissioner.
