SHILLONG, JUN 23: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Urban Affairs and Transport Sniawbhalang Dhar on Tuesday said the state government will inaugurate more than 15 new buses on July 3 and asked departments to ensure proper maintenance of vehicles to extend their lifespan.
Dhar said he has repeatedly urged bus operators, drivers, and departments to maintain buses so they do not become unfit within 1-2 years.
“From time to time we have asked the bus operators and drivers, we request them to maintain the buses. It should not be in such a manner that only after 1-2 years, these buses should be condemned. We keep requesting those who look after these buses to maintain them,” Dhar said.
He said a meeting was held last month to review the condition of buses and to ensure they present a good image for passengers.
“Last month I had called a meeting on this and to make sure that these buses should look nice, so that people can come and sit on these buses,” he stated. The deputy CM announced that the new fleet will be flagged off from the ISBT and will operate on different routes across the city.
“On 3 July I will inaugurate new buses with a different line and these buses will be released from ISBT, with different routes. 15 plus new buses,” Dhar said.
He added that several government departments currently use buses, and urged them to take responsibility for upkeep going forward.
“These buses are being used by different departments like Planning, Municipal, MUDA etc. We are requesting them to maintain these buses properly, from now onward,” he said.
