SHILLONG, APR 8: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has urged the Centre to hold consultations with stakeholders and make necessary amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, before it is passed.
Speaking after a meeting with Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju in New Delhi, Sangma said, “We requested the minister to have a larger discussion with other stakeholders so that concerns can be addressed.”
Sangma expressed apprehensions about certain provisions in the bill, particularly Section 16, which allows for seizure of property based on a designated authority’s decision.
“We are concerned about the property rights of different institutes, especially Christian institutions,” he said.
The Chief Minister welcomed Rijiju’s positive response and assurance to take up the matter at the top level.
“We are hopeful that there will be a detailed discussion and necessary amendments will be made to ensure that the property rights of minority institutions are protected,” Sangma added.
Sangma was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong during the meeting.
The government is coordinating with various organizations to express concerns and seek amendments to the bill.
