MCCL strike continues

SHILLONG, NOV 18: Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited (MCCL) employees have demanded immediate operationalization of the new expansion plant as well as releasing their 10 months pending salaries. The employees are on strike since November 16 and have extended till November 21 to protest against non-payment of salaries and lackadaisical attitude of the state government towards the welfare of the employees and the plant as a whole.

A delegation under the banner of the Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited Employees’ Union (MCCEU) met the MCCL Managing Director Sanjay Goyal to seek his immediate intervention into the issues.

“We have demanded the Managing Director to ensure that the pending salaries of the employees are released at the earliest to enable them to look after their families and pay school fees of their children,” MCCEU president S Wahlang told reporters after the meeting on Wednesday.

He said due to discontinuation of the functioning of the old plant, releasing of the salaries of the employees was also stopped, thereby forcing them to take loans to meet their daily requirements.

Stating around 500 employees have been affected, Wahlang said, “The monthly salary expenditure is to the tune of Rs 1.30 crore.”

He informed that Goyal has assured the employees that he would soon release their salaries from the company’s fund till the time that the state government comes up with a solution on the issue.

Established in the 1960’s, the state government has decided to expand the Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited in 2005. The foundation stone for the new project was laid by the then Chief Minister DD Lapang on April 1, 2005 and subsequently the civil work on this started only in July 2006.

“However, even after almost 10 years, the new plant is yet to see the light of the day and the non-functioning of the old plant is the main reasons for the delay in releasing the salaries,” Wahlang said.

According to him, the salary expenditures for the staffs totally dependent on the production and sale of cement manufactured from the plant. When asked, he said that the officials have targeted December for operational of the new expansion plant.-By Our Reporter
