To all the football fans in Meghalaya and other north eastern states, Langsning Sports Club is a familiar and famous name in the football arena as it has big fan followings. The club has added to the richness of the game and is considered a talent trove of footballers in Meghalaya.
But you might be surprised to know that the Langsning Sports Club was carved out of social organization established in 1954 the Seng Samla Jaiaw Langsning. In those good olden days the idea of forming a separate sports club was not in fashion as sports was considered more of a social programme rather than a sporting event. However in 1969 the Seng Samla Jaiaw Langsning broke this barrier and enrolled itself as a football club and took part in the football league organized by the Shillong Sports Association. Its football avatar came to be known as Langsning Sports Club.
Langsning Sports Club registered with the government in 1975 and took part in all the football tournaments organized by the Shillong Sports Association as well as by other Sports Associations’ in other north eastern states.
1983 was a big year for the Langsning Sports Club as it climbed up the ladder into the 1st Division level and won many league championships. When the Shillong Sports Association introduced the super division to bring the standard of football at par with the rest of the country Langsning was placed in this prestigious division.
Langsning Sports Club has performed consistently all these years and has never slipped beyond the third position in the league tournament since 1983. The reason for this consistency is that the club still has the officials over the years.
Going beyond participation in football tournament Langsning Sports Club initiated a football programme called “Catch Them Young” from 1986 for encouraging participation of youngsters below the age of sixteen years.- By Suraj Joshi
