SHILLONG, JUNE 19: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) today demanded the state government to immediately withdraw its alleged decision to transfer a land belonging to a government department to the Air Force authority.
“We demand the state government to withdraw the decision to transfer the 18 acre land to the Eastern Air Command immediately to avoid any unwanted confrontation with the government and breach of peace in the area,” KSU-Upper Shillong president Lewis Nongneng said in a letter to chief minister Mukul Sangma on Friday.
He said the union reiterates its strong opposition against the decision to transfer the 18 acres land belonging to the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department to the Eastern Air Command in the 19th meeting of the Rajya Sainik Board (RSB) held on December 4, last year.
“A meeting convened by the union with all the Rangbah Shnong of Upper Shillong to discuss the transfer of land to the defence establishment have also expressed their disappointment and resolve to oppose any such move by the state government,” Nongneng said.
According to him, the union is of the view that the Defence establishment is in possession of acres of land in the state especially in Shillong, and due to this the state government has been unable to widen its road due to the as the defence establishment oppose and refuse to part with an inch of their land anywhere in the state.
“So, therefore suggest that the defence establishment should be transferring land to the state government to ease the traffic congestion in the city by parting with their land to facilitate for the construction of fly-over and widening of the roads wherever necessary in the state,” the KSU-USC president stated.- By Our Reporter
