SHILLONG, JUL 13: The state police have issued a lookout notice and formed a special team to trace the accused in an alleged rape case registered at Laitumkhrah Police Station, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said on Monday.

Syiem said coordination is underway with police in other states to apprehend the accused.

“With regard to the rape case which has been registered in Laitumkhrah, we have actually sent a lookout notice to Mizoram and now we have issued notices across all of India. A team has been set up to actually trace the accused,” Syiem said.

He said digital statements have been recorded and more victims may be involved.

“Digital statements have been recorded. We have come to know that there are other victims also. The victim’s statement has been recorded and we have come to know that other victims are also there and they will also be examined in due course of time,” the SP said.

Syiem added that police are in touch with more alleged victims who were contacted over phone and have been asked to come forward to record their statements and file FIRs.

“We have spoken to some more victims, but it was just over the phone. Now we have called them to come and give their statement and FIR. That is yet to be done,” he said.

On social media claims regarding the case, Syiem urged caution.

“Social media posts are not facts. We are yet to ascertain the veracity of that. So unless people come forward and give their statements, and we examine them and get their statements, only then can we ascertain that yes, they are victims,” he said.

The SP said the accused has not been located in Aizawl despite a search.

“He has not gone to Aizawl. In fact, I am in touch with the SP of Aizawl. Aizawl has searched the house of the accused, he is not there. In fact, from the beginning, when the social media post emerged, it was said that he had gone absconding. We have contacted the SP of Aizawl and they have searched his residence, but he was not there,” Syiem said.

He said a chargesheet will be filed once the accused is arrested and further facts emerge.

“Once the accused is arrested and more facts are brought forward, we will file the chargesheet in the case as soon as possible. But right now, the immediate action of the police is to actually catch the accused,” he added.
