SHILLONG, AUG 20: Three top leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) were on Thursday remanded to 14 days judicial custody in connection with the violence during the outfit’s bike rally in Shillong.

“The three KSU leaders were produced before the court, which has remanded them to 14 days judicial custody,” East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said.

KSU president Raymond Kharjana, vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and general secretary Reuben Najiar were arrested earlier on Wednesday night and taken to Sadar Police Station.

Police sources said they have been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for alleged damage to public property, assault and violation of law.

The arrests came hours after the leaders addressed the media, expressed regret over the violence and alleged that miscreants had infiltrated the rally to sabotage their agitation.

The rally on Wednesday had turned violent, with stone pelting, vandalism of 31 vehicles including those from outside the state, burning of a government vehicle, and assaults on pedestrians at Fire Brigade, Nongmensong, Polo, Barik and Mawlai.

Police later raided the KSU office at Jaiaw and fired tear gas.
