SHILLONG, AUG 20: Citing attacks on government vehicles during the August 19 KSU bike rally, the Meghalaya Government Drivers’ Welfare Association has asked the government to restrict deployment of official vehicles in vulnerable areas.
In a letter to the Chief Secretary, Association president C Syiemlieh said several government vehicles were damaged and some set ablaze, while some drivers suffered minor injuries on duty.
The association urged the government to direct all departments to avoid unnecessary movement of government vehicles in sensitive pockets and to allow drivers to use officers’ private vehicles for routine office work till normalcy returns, while essential and emergency duties may continue with adequate security.
It also reiterated its long-pending demand for Risk Allowance for government drivers, noting they work in risky conditions without any such benefit.
