SHILLONG, JULY 31: The HSPDP State Youth Wing has condemned the alleged use of tear gas on peaceful protesters at Daistong, East Jaintia Hills, saying civilians including women and children were affected.
In a statement issued on Friday, its president Korbarlang Syiemlieh said it was deeply concerning that a mother and child were reportedly exposed to tear gas during the demonstration.
The youth wing urged the Meghalaya government to immediately take note of the incident and institute an independent and transparent inquiry.
It added that those found responsible for any excessive use of force must face action under the law.
Calling for dialogue over confrontation, the HSPDP youth body said public concerns must be addressed with respect and consultation.
It also appealed to authorities to ensure women, children and the elderly are not put at risk during protests, while asking citizens to continue expressing dissent peacefully.
