SHILLONG, JUL 29: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the government on the hawker relocation project, asserting that the move is aimed at public convenience and not at displacing vendors.
Tynsong said the project is important and the government is providing designated spaces along with relocation allowances.
“I think we need to request all the stakeholders to please cooperate with the government because this project is very important for us. It is not that we are throwing them out, but we are relocating them to a designated place, along with relocation allowances,” Tynsong said.
“We would like to see the public at ease, both day and night. So, I would request all the stakeholders to please cooperate,” he added.
Addressing concerns raised by some groups, the Deputy CM clarified that the government’s intent is not to evict hawkers.
“I have seen some groups of people saying, ‘Why is the government throwing them out?’ and this and that. It is not a question of throwing them out. In fact, we are just relocating them. There is relocation, and at the same time, relocation fees are also being provided by us,” he said.
