TURA, MAR 25: The Garo Hills United Alliance (GHUA) on Friday decided to boycott the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) budget session, scheduled for March 29.
The alliance comprises of member of district council – Rupert M. Sangma, Righteous N. Sangma, Libestone T. Sangma, Devier M. Sangma and Kenadik Marak decided to boycott terming “illegal way of functioning” of council chairman Boston Marak.
Rupert had submitted a motion for discussion on the participation of non-tribal in GHADC election, which has been disallowed by the legislative branch of the district council. The GHUA feels that participation of non-tribals in GHADC election defeats the very purpose and objective of the creation of district council.
“My intention of bringing this motion was in the interest of the tribal people. The rejection of the motion is an act of betrayal of the aspiration of the tribal people. The continuation of this executive committee is against the interest of the tribals”, said Rupert.
The GHUA also stated that they did not join the GHPA because they formed the executive committee with a non-tribal member.
Rupert informed that they would apprise the Congress members about the move of the chairman and if necessary would meet the Governor of the state to brief him about this arbitrary and undemocratic action of the council chairman.
The five members of the council have formed an alliance to champion the cause of the indigenous people in the council. Seven Congress members are also part of the opposition in the district council.
National Peoples’ Party (NPP) led Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA) has formed the executive committee in the council, which has a strength of 29 elected members.- From Our Correspondent
