Fill vacant teacher posts now, KHADC EM urges govt

SHILLONG, APR 7: KHADC Executive Member and Mawthadraishan MDC Powell Sohkhlet has expressed concern over the 677 vacant teacher posts in government lower primary schools, including 29 in Eastern West Khasi Hills district.
“Who will compensate for this shortage? How can two teachers effectively teach 120 students?” Sohkhlet questioned, highlighting the impact on students’ future.
He urged the state government to immediately fill these vacancies, saying, “Many have cleared the Meghalaya Teachers Eligibility Test and Dl.Ed. Why the delay in appointment?”
Sohkhlet cited an example of a government lower primary school in Eastern West Khasi Hills with only one teacher, which remained closed for over three weeks after the teacher’s transfer.
He suggested rationalizing teacher deployment, saying, “There are schools with 10 students and two teachers, while others have over 100 students and only two teachers. The education department should merge teachers from schools with low enrollment to those with high enrollment, ensuring quality education for all.”
Sohkhlet emphasized, “Our students deserve better. I urge the government to act swiftly to address this issue.”
