Fact finding team to visit Bangalore, other states

Shillong, August 16:In the wake of reported threat to the North East students community in Karnataka,  Meghalaya government has decided to dispatch fact finding team to Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Maharashtra and verify the allegation of racial discrimination against students from  this region.

The government has also sought the help of union ministry of home affairs to facilitate the fact finding team visits to these states.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told reporters on Thursday, “We have decided to send a delegation from the state to the different affected states to conduct verification on the reported discrimination against our youths studying in their states as well as to reassure our students that necessary steps are being taken.

The government had to take this decision as rumours were floating that the students from north east including Meghalaya were forced to leave Karnataka following threat to their life. The threat emanated from smses that said that the north east students’ community will be attacked. More than five thousand people from north east has already fled from Bangalore.

The threat to the people of north east is directly linked with the communal clash that has taken place between the tribal Bodos and the migrant Bangladeshis in Assam.

Sangma assured , “The government is in constant engagement with the counterparts in South India and have impressed upon them to take steps for protection of the people from north east.”  He, however, informed that except in Pune, there are no incidents reported from other States”- By Our Reporter
