SHILLONG, NOV 27: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has questioned the alleged failure of the state’s law department to take action against the Vice Chancellor of National Law University (NLU), Meghalalya, Indrajit Dube, despite allegations of corruption and misadministration.

In a letter to the law minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Thursday, KSU alleged that Dube has been involved in various irregularities, including misusing university funds, making illegal appointments, and violating the Meghalaya State Reservation Policy.

“(We) had provided the appropriate authorities with sufficient grounds of corruption and misadministration of the VC of NLU through its RTI findings to remove him and it was assured to the Union that an inquiry will be set up and its report will be concluded within two months. But it has been six months till date and no action has been taken and the VC of NLU continues in his merry ways making illegal appointments and continuing his corrupt practices,” it said adding “The union had waited patiently for the government to take steps to take necessary actions but the Government failure to address such an important issue shows that the government promote corrupt practices.”

The KSU highlighted several instances of alleged corruption, including expenditure of Rs. 15,10,347 on non-official visits, Rs. 3,56,750 on alcoholic beverages, and payment of Rs 46,83,500 as salaries to professors who did not take classes.

“The are dozens other more irregularities that the Union had mentioned in its previous letters whereby the appointments made are not as per the Meghalaya State Reservation Policy and the VC is very keen to change the reservation policy as to allow his nepotistic appointees to be permanent employees of NLU. To this effect, in the recent recruitment of Asst. Professor, he deliberately put excessive eligibility criteria so that none of the indigenous candidates are able to apply, which will help him strengthens his cause to change the reservation policy for the betterment of the University,” it also stated.

The union has urged the government to take necessary action against Dube before his term ends in February 2026 and to ensure that corruption is not tolerated.

“The Union will like to reiterate its stand that Indrajit Dube must not get a second term as his term is ending in February, 2026 and as per the Act, the first VC can hold office without exceeding 3 years and his tenure is completed,” it said while demanding the government not to tolerate corruption practices by taking action against the NLU VC based on the RTI findings.
