Shillong, August 30: Twenty-five Shillong Special Transport System (SSTS) was launched Thursday by Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh Don Bosco Square.
The 24-seater buses are meant for school students and office goers and will operate in and around Shillong during office and school hours only.
Although similar to the public transport buses run by the Meghalaya Transport Corporation, the special buses will, however, ferry only students and office goers and fares can be paid on a monthly basis and will be operated by the Synroplang Self Help Group under the aegis of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB).
These new buses will also be available for lease for any socio-cultural or religious purposes.
Speaking to Oh! Meghalaya, SMB Chief Executive Officer T Lyngwa said, “These buses unlike the others can be hired out also for emergency, like church functions or funerals.”
On the apprehension that more vehicles on the road can only mean severe traffic jams, Lyngwa said, “On the contrary. For every bus, there will be about twenty cars off the road as people will not be using their cars.” – By Our Reporter
