SHILLONG, OCT 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party has expressed confidence to win the Shella seat in the bye-election, slated to be held on October 21.
Talking to media persons here on Friday, BJP leader and South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai said that all the political parties including independent candidates are fighting against the BJP.
The BJP candidate Joshua Warjri is contesting against five other candidates – Balajied Kupar Synrem (UDP), Mosjo Rockfeller Wanswett (PDF), Batyngshain Laitmon Ryngnga (INC), Grace Mary Kharpuri (IND) and Komen Laitmon (IND).
The bye election is necessitated following the death of sitting MLA and former Assembly Speaker late Dr Donkupar Roy on July 28.
Stating that the BJP is very strong, Shullai said the party is having a good chance to win the Shella seat because the votes of the other five candidates will be divided.
The MLA also said that nearly 5,000 people from Shella constituency had voted for the BJP in the last Lok Sabha polls, which he contested.
“This many people have voted for the BJP and that too without any campaigning as I did not get the chance to step in Shella and that party unit was also not strong that time. If the over 4,778 voters remain with us, we have a better chance,” he added.
According to him, the votes of the other five candidates will also be divided. He said Shella will set an example as its people are wise and they want that the party candidate to get the support of the Centre for all round development of the constituency.
