Situated at a height of about 2000 ft Balpakram is enmeshed in folklore, legend, myths, culture and beliefs of the Garo people. Known as ‘land’ of perpetual winds, it occupies a place of honour in Garo mythology. It is believe dto be inhabited by the spirits of the departed ancestors transported through the air after cremation. The spirits after entering this land are transformed back to human beings living like ordinary men and wormn.
The Hindus also believe Balpakram to be sacred for when Laxman was seriously injured during the war with Ravana, a rare herb required was found here by Hanuman. But not knowing which particular herb was needed, he broke the top of the hill and carried it away. The missing portion of that hill became a deep awning canyon.
