SHILLONG, APR 4: Two persons were killed due to a landslide in East Khasi Hills district.
“Two lives were lost due to a landslide at Mawlat village under Mawkynrew Block in the district,” official sources said on Monday.
The deceased persons have been identified as Rohit Kshiar (14) of Mawlat Village and Dilibon Tangsang (35) of Mawkria Village.
In another landslide occurred at Umblai Village, two houses and two shops were reported damaged at Umblai Village due to the landslide.
“The house belong to one Kro Kshiar which was fully damaged, and another house belong to Phrangki Khongjoh is partially damaged. The shops of Sngur Khongjoh and Kshonti Mary Khongjoh were also affected by landslides,” the official said.
Due to the landslide at Thangbnai-Mawlyngot, the road was damaged and a vehicle was washed away. However, no casualty was reported and PWD was deputed for clearing the road. Clearing of the road is in progress
Another landslide was reported at Lyngshing village that destroyed five houses belonging to Jamin Surong, Judia Nongrum, Kastina Nongrum, Kyrkhu Longshiang and Hame Bina. Officials informed that Hame Bina suffered a minor injury during the landslide that occurred at her house.
In a landslide at Wahumkhrah river near Lawmali Quarter, a portion of the road was eroded due to landslides at Wahumkhrah river near Wahingdoh. Part of the area has been cordoned off to prevent any further accidents. Instruction was given to MeECL, PWD and SMB for immediate damage assessment and restoration work.
Landslide occurred at 33rd Km of Mawphlang Balat Road under Mawsynram Block. Clearing of the road is in process. Instruction has been given for immediate damage assessment and restoration work. The road has since been cleared and vehicles are now allowed to ply.
In a landslide at Shillong –Dawki Road ( NH- 40) . The road was cut–off at a place above Saitbakon village. One vehicle was stuck at the place of the incident. No casualty was reported and all persons were evacuated from the vehicle. Students stranded enroute to their Board Exams were given assistance by Police and were able to reach their centres. Restoration work has been in progress all day and as of 5:00pm, the road has been cleared. PWD and NHIDCL have been instructed to keep teams on standby in case of any more adverse weather conditions.
During the landslide at all the seven locations, officials rushed to the spot for assessment of damage. Gratuitous Relief in the form of foodgrains, blankets, etc is being disbursed by the BDO for all affected families in the area.
