SHILLONG, APR 12: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress-MPYC- organised a cleaning of the Ganol riverside at Asibra on Saturday. The theme of the cleaning drive was “Our Hill, Our River, Our Place, and Our Responsibility.” “Water is a life giver and in these hills there should not be a scarcity of water. But this is not the case because in recent years, we have seen that there is scarcity of water even in the villages,” MPYC president Richard Marak said.
Marak said the MPYC decided to lead the way by first cleaning up this portion of the Ganol riverside. He said,”The amount of junk in the form of broken and unbroken bottles, plastic bags, leftovers of picnics, etc we collected from this small area was so much that we feel that people should be sensitized on proper and responsible disposal of garbage.”
According to Marak, not only should the rivers be clean, proper management of catchment areas should be maintained. He said the MPYC hope that in the future it can do more with the help of the youth in particular and the people in general for keeping the rivers clean.
More than 200 MPYC members including the former Tura Lok Sabha Youth Congress president Septerwin R. Sangma along with Marak were present during the cleaning drive.- By Our Reporter
