SHILLONG, AUG 17: A two day workshop on Rain water Harvesting System in schools for the purpose of drinking water and sanitation and was held today at Maharam Government Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat.
Speaking on the occasion, KHADC MDC Hadrian Lyngdoh said that the programme was organized with a view to conserve and preserve water with a hope that the programme would benefit the people of this area.
“Water is one of the basic necessity of life”, he said the people should be involve in rain water harvesting a system which is not new but could be a failure if not implemented properly. He say that as this area is one of the wets place on earth preservation and conservation of water is a must for every household so that that stored water can be use during draught period and water scarcity. Therefore, each one of us should make proper use of this kind of innovation by realising the value and preciousness of water, he therefore urged upon one and all to avail the benefits through this programme as this could be a means of livelihood in the form of mineral water and at the same time request the officers to organise more of such programmes in the future so that the people of the district could be benefited.
It may be mentioned that an innovation of such system and the second in the State has been setup at Government Lower Primary School, Mawkyrwat with a water storage tank of about 6000 litres and the first of which had been set up at Umthli, Laitlyngkot, East Khasi Hills District.
J Synrem, State Community Gender coordinator, SEMAM, (SSA) gave an introductory speech.
Earlier W. Biam, District Mission Co-ordinator (SSA) & Additional Deputy Commissioner, South West Khasi Hills District delivered a welcome address while J. Thyrniang Block Mission Coordinator,& Sub Divisional School Education Officer, Mawkyrwat offered the Vote of thanks.
