SHILLONG, JUNE 12: A workshop on ‘Recalling the Great Shillong Earthquake of 12th June 1987: Quest for a Reliable and Effective Mitigation and Post Disaster Strategies’ was held today at North Eastern Council (NEC).
Organised by NESAC and sponsored by North Eastern Council, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, the workshop highlighted on various issues related to Earth Quakes, Landslides and other aspects of Seismology with special reference to North Eastern Region.
PP Shrivastav, IAS, (Retd), former Member, NEC and now Member, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion in the inaugural session, CK Das, IAS, (Retd), Member, NEC, Ram Muivah, IAS, Secretary, NEC, CH Kharshing, Planning Adviser, NEC and Shri PL N Raju, Director, NESAC, reflected on the growing needs for Disaster Preparedness and Post Disaster Strategies.
In the business sessions in the workshop, discussions were made on the themes “Advancement in Earthquake & Landslide Precursors and Early Warnings in NER” and “Experiences, Preparedness and Response for Post Disaster Management” by Dr Arun Bapat, Prof P Phukon, Shri Manohar, Dr Saurav Baruah, Dr CD Singh and Prof D C Goswami.
SDMA/ representatives of State Disaster Management Authorities from various North Eastern States also made presentations on the occasion on how well they can be prepared if any disaster happens in future.
