Shillong, Oct 15: Shillong Press Club president David Laitphlang implored on the youngsters to be active and don the watchdog robe by become a “citizen journalist” instead of debating on issues only on the cafes and tea shops. He said educated, alert citizens can actually contribute to the over betterment of a society by becoming a citizen journalist raising pertinent issues that are important for the state.
Inaugurating the one day workshop “Photography and Media Technology” organized by the Lady Keane College in collaboration with IGNOU Institute For Vocational Education & Training (IIVET), Shillong at the Lady Keane college campus Monday, Laitphlang called on the students to not only discuss the problems and issues but also write it down and send it to newspapers that might be interested in publishing it.
Besides the Lady Keane College principal Dr. C Massar, IIVET Officer on Special Duty (OSD) AS Guha, who grace the occasion as the guest of honour, resources persons www.ohmeghalaya .com editor Tilak Rai and Times of India correspondent Manosh Das were also present.
Guha under whose initiative the three months appreciation course on “Citizen Journalism” has been started for the interested students of Lady Keane College underscored the importance of the citizen journalism. He said citizen journalism, emergence of the new media are all harbinger of social changes through writing. He called upon the students to make use of this medium to bring about a change that they would like to see.
After the formal inauguration was over, Tilak Rai and Manosh Das took over and the conducted the workshop. Das explain the basic of journalism to the students even as Rai took them through the concept of photojournalism and media technology.
The workshop continued till late afternoon as the two resources persons enacted with the students explaining and answering queries related to the topic.-
