TURA, AUG 12: A twenty-four year old petrol pump worker Bittu Patel was on Tuesday shot dead at point blank range by unidentified assailant in Bokmagre, about 7 km from Tura town.
The incident occurred at around 8.30 am and after the incident all the petrol pumps remained close.
Patel, who hails Samastipur in Bihar was an employee of Rachel petrol pump. He was working at the fuel station for 5 years now.
West Garo hills SP Mukesh Singh told this website, “The incident took place around 8:30 am this morning.Gunmen shot at him from point blank range on his chest. We have registered a case on the incident based on an FIR. We have obtained the CCTV footage from the fuel station. It shows two bikers, one with a helmet. The footage is not clear but we are trying to figure out.”
The manager of the petrol pump said two persons were on a new Pulsar bike,which had no number plate. He informed that Bittu went up to pour the fuel and was trying to speak to the biker, who wore a full mask helmet, while the pillion rider shot at him. He said, “He died on the spot.”
Bittu’s death has sparked condemnation with the petrol pump association in Garo hills calling for an immediate shutdown. The petrol pump association has met deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi to apprise him about their decision for closure. They also met SP Mukesh Singh seeking actions to book the culprit.
The petrol pump owner, who did not wish to be quoted, said, “Bittu was recently engaged and his marriage was due after two months. His father, who also lives in Tura, has gone to Bihar to fix up the marriage date. We will send his body.”
“It is a sorry state of affairs such incident happened with him. We will do whatever possible to support to his family at this time of grief and sorrow”, added the owner.
Police have recovered a 9mm bullet shell from the incident spot. His post mortem was done at Tura civil hospital this afternoon.
The closure of petrol station in Tura has brought Tura to a complete standstill. Public transport in Garo hills is almost closed down. Few private vehicles were seen in the streets of Tura during the day.- From Our Correspondent
