SHILLONG, APR 8: Acknowledging the rise in crime against women, chief minister Mukul Sangma said that the government propose to set up a separate investigation wing in Shillong with dedicated team of officers to deal with investigations in such cases.Sangma informed that the government proposes to separate investigation from the other functions of police. He said a trial set up would be initiated in Shillong apart from setting up of a separate directorate of prosecution.
Sangma said, “The separate investigation wing will have officers equipped with proper training and experience which will lead to significant improvement in the quality of investigation and thereby lead to higher conviction rate.”
Informing about the steps taken by the government in addressing the issue, Sangma said, “Women police stations have been set up at the headquarters of seven districts and these will be set up in the newly created districts as well.” He also informed special juvenile police units have been constituted in all the eleven districts.”
Sangma also asserted that the three fast track courts which have been set up in Shillong, Tura and Jowai are fully functional. A special court has also been set up in Nongstoin to try sensitive cases pertaining to women, besides, he added, special public prosecutors have been appointed to pursue cases in each of these four courts. – By Our Reporter
