Ridaroy Shadap, who is a mother of six children and a resident of Khliehtyrshi, West Jaintia hills district submitted the complaint to the district Superintendent of Police (SP) in Jowai after receiving several threatening SMS messages.

She alleged that she was married to Lumlang Lyngkhoi, who is the OC of Khliehriat police station since 2012 and he had promised to take care of her and five children from her former husband. Shadap had also got a child from Lyngkhoi.

Shadap, who is also running a small shop along the National Highway-44, said that the police officer also made her changed the father’s name in the certificates of all her children and prohibited them to keep contact with their biological father.

“When he (Lyngkhoi) stops coming home, I started asking for maintenance and even approach the SP of East Jaintia hills district for his intervention,” she told reporters in a press conference on Friday.

According to her, instead he starts sending threatening messages which made me feel insecure and did dare to stay at home or work in my shop.

Earlier, Shadap had also filed an FIR against the wife of Lyngkhoi, Melita Pakma of Mookyndeng village along with three others for beating, cutting her hair and looting away a gold ring and cash of Rs 20,000 inside her shop on April 4.

“Just because I ask for maintenance, he even sent his wife to abuse me to which I had lodged a complaint,” she said while lamenting that till date, though the case had been registered but the police are yet to make any arrest.

When asked, she said that when he approached me, he told me that he had already divorced his wife and has been living separately for many years. “I have been mentally and physically tortured by him and his wife and I urged the authority concerned to take action,” Shadap said.

The Civil Society Women Organization (CSWO) Jaintia hills unit led by Irene Hujon, Khasi Jaintia National Union (KJNU) and Hynniewtrep National People Front (HNPF) has condemned the police department for delaying action against the police officer.

“Lyngkhoi has brought a bad name to the entire police department by duping many women and then abandoned them,” the NGO leaders said while adding that police are expected to protect and deliver justice but not to be law breakers.

According to CSWO leader, police officer cannot just go and make everybody his wives and then made them fight with each other.

Stating that petition were submitted to SPs of both the districts, HNPF president Ronnie Rani said, “We demand that legal action should be taken against Lyngkhoi as per law and we expect that the police will ensure that the law is equal to all.”

He further stated that the failure of the police department to take action will be taken as an attempt to defend and protect its own men.

Meanwhile, the NGOs have also sought the home minister and Meghalaya State Women Commission to intervene into the issue.-By Our Reporter
