Polling conducted in 58 polling stations spread across the constituency was held from 7 am till 4 pm. Williamnagar constituency has a total of 32,345 eligible voters which include 16,713 males and 15,632 females.
“The total percentage of voter turnout has been recorded at 78.82 per cent,” Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Roy Kharkongor said.
The highest voters’ turnout was recorded by Rongreng Baiza polling station at 92.5 percent, while lowest was at Willimanagar government LP School with only 55.57 percent, he said.
Earlier, the percentage of voter turnout was at 76.87 percent till 5 pm as polling officials from polling booths across the Simsang River were still on their way back.
Asked, the CEO said that defects were detected in one EVM and one VVPAT before the poll and the polling continued smoothly after they were immediately replaced with the good ones.
Williamnagar is presently being represented by opposition Congress MLA Deborah C Marak.
The election to Williamnagar was countermanded following the killing of former NCP candidate Jonathone N Sangma in an IED attack before the just concluded February 27 – Assembly general elections.
The NCP has fielded Jonathone’s wife Krinilla Marak as its candidate. The other seven candidates in the fray include NPP candidate, Marcuise Marak, Mahamsing M. Sangma (UDP), Santosh R. Marak (BJP), and four Independents – Sengbath R. Marak, Lahatson N. Marak, Siljong R. Marak, and Jan N. Arengh.
Meanwhile, counting of votes will take place on May 1.
