TURA, JULY 6: As part of the week-long observation of the ‘Digital India Week’, West Garo Hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi on Monday inaugurated the launching of Wi-fi and distribution of tablets and projector at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Tura.

The Digital India programme envisions transforming India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy and it aims towards preparing India for the knowledge based transformation and delivering good governance to citizens by way of synchronized and coordinated engagement with both the central and the state governments. The objective of the Digital India Week is to inform, educate and engage with citizens through organization of events at large number of Digital points of presence such as schools, post offices, gram panchayat and other places.

While addressing the gathering as chief guest, Bakshi said that a landmark has been created by launching Wi-fi at one of the oldest school of the town as part of the Digital India Week celebrations. He also informed that the programme would ensure that government services are available to citizens electronically which focuses on promoting inclusive growth in few related sectors.

Stressing on the importance of Information and Technology (IT) and computer related skills Bakshi said that they are in great demand and job opportunities are available even across the country. Therefore, he urge the students to make best use of the IT enable services provided to them for their better future and further cautioned them to use it judiciously and with responsibility.

Additional deputy commissioner and nodal officer of Digital India Week, West Garo hills ZJ Sangma highlighted the importance of programme which prepares India for a knowledge future and plans to connect rural areas with high speed internet network. Stating that the programme is a convergence of various departments, he said that it weaves many ideas and thoughts which have been envisaged by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) to empower every citizen digitally which would facilitate to bridge the rural and urban digital divide.

Officers of National Informatics Centre Tura, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., teachers and students were present at the function. Earlier, during the programme Government Girls Higher Secondary School principal S Saha welcomed the gathering and also chaired the programme while Rimbie Areng assistant lecturer, Government Girls Secondary School proposed the vote of thanks.- By Our Reporter
