SHILLONG, APR 2: The West Garo Hills district administration has extended prohibitory orders for another fortnight, citing continued sensitivity in law-and-order conditions.
An order issued District Magistrate Vibhor Agarwal said the restrictions, first imposed on March 16, will remain in force until mid-April unless withdrawn earlier.
“Immediate prevention and speedy remedy are necessary to avert any imminent danger to public peace, safety, and tranquility,” the order stated.
Agarwal invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and relevant state legislation, noting that while overt incidents had subsided, intelligence reports indicated a “reasonable apprehension of recurrence of activities prejudicial to public order.
”The order directs police and executive magistrates to enforce the restrictions strictly. “Any person contravening this order shall be liable for prosecution and penal action,” it warned, adding that violations could also lead to compensation claims for damages caused.
The directive is binding on all individuals, groups, and organizations within West Garo Hills.
Authorities said the measure will be reviewed periodically and modified if the ground situation improves.
