West Garo Hills celebrates International Women’s Day with call for economic empowerment

TURA, MAR 20: Over 200 women gathered at Rongram Horti Hub Training Hall here Friday to mark International Women’s Day, with officials urging greater economic participation under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls.”
District Social Welfare Officer Madonna Onasis T. Sangma said the event showcased talents of women Self Help Groups, strengthening the local economy, and highlighted government schemes to improve socio‑economic conditions.
“We urge women to actively avail these opportunities with determination and commitment towards building a poverty‑free society through economic empowerment,” she said.
In her address as chief guest, Hemaritha Ch. Sangma, Meghalaya State Commission for Women vice chairperson, reflected on women’s role in shaping families and society, expressing satisfaction at “the positive transformation in the lives of women in the region.”
Stalls at the venue displayed local spices, pickles and agri‑horticultural produce, while entrepreneurs shared their success journeys.
WPSI Jakre M. Sangma of the police spoke on awareness about workplace sexual harassment, citing One Stop Centre services.
The programme included a music performance and felicitated six women entrepreneurs – Shano Chelsy M Sangma, Harkhya Nastasia B Marak, Sengmitchi C Marak, Gremila Ch Marak, Kellisha R Marak and Dr Cynthia R Marak.
