SHILLONG, JUL 31: UDP leader and Adviser to the Social Welfare department Paul Lyngdoh on Friday said the clearing of hawkers from Khyndailad was done with an alternative plan in place, and not as a case of forced eviction.Lyngdoh said he was part of the team that carried out the relocation.
“I am happy that I was part of the team. I was instrumental in getting the entire Khyndailad stretch vacated,” he said.
“This is the only part of wholesome urban development where we do not throw people away, but we constructed alternative spaces for them,” Lyngdoh added.
He said the new vending zones were built with proper infrastructure for the sellers.
“Those spaces have all facilities, like water, electricity, washroom facilities, and protection for their produce. The sellers are protected from other elements because these are well-constructed shelters,” he said.
Responding to complaints about the current use of Khyndai Lad, Lyngdoh said public opinion has been contradictory.
“When vendors first moved, people said Khyndai Lad has become too quiet. And now when musicians move in, you say Khyndai Lad has become too noisy. So what options do you want?” he asked.
