SHILLONG, MAR 16: Meghalaya sports & youth affairs minister Zenith Sangma on Wednesday said the department is on the verge of submitting its views on the draft-outlined of the State Sports Policy prepared by the IIM, Shillong.
Replying in the assembly on Wednesday, Sangma said, “The outline of the State Sports Policy has been submitted by the IIM to the department and the department has to give its views to it and re-submitted to the IIM.”
According to him, the IIM was approached to assist the state government in framing the state sports policy after it failed in its two attempts that were made in 2008 and 2014. “The expenditure incurred for engaging the IIM to frame the policy is Rs 21 lakh,” he said.
Highlighting the phase-wise plan to complete the framing of the sports policy, Sangma said, “We have asked the IIM to complete submission of the draft policy within four months, which it will then be placed by the department in public domain within three months.”
He said the next step will be having consultation workshops on the policy before placing it for the final approval of the state cabinet within one month timeframe.
Earlier, HSPDP chief Ardent Basaiawmoit expressed concern over the failure of the state government to come out with the state sports policy despite being discussed on the floor of the house on many occasions.
He also sought clarification as to what are the difficulties encountered by the state government in framing the policy
On this regard, the minister said while the draft policy which was framed and circulated in 2008 required further examination, the inputs given by the State Resources Group constituted in 2014 was found not to be substantial.
According to him, the government has also engaged different sports’ associations for their views but they never came back with their views that ultimately led to the failure in framing the policy.- By Our Reporter
