Vibrant media required for vibrant democracy: CM

Shillong, Nov 16: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma announced enhancement of the advertisement rates for the newspapers, own land for setting up of the Shillong Press Club premises and also setting up of a tripartite committee to study the nitty-gritty of the recommendations made by  the Majithia Wage Board for enhancing salaries of the journalists.

Inaugurating the National Press Day celebration organised by the Shillong Press Club in collaboration with the Meghalaya directorate of information and public relation at the Shillong Club Friday, Sangma indirectly told the management of the newspapers that they “should share” the responsibilities of paying better salaries to working journalists.

Speaking as the chief guest during the panel discussion on “Role of Media During Elections” on the occasion, Sangma also said that “vibrant media” is required for “vibrant democracy.” He felt that there is a need for the media to penetrate into rural areas as issues and problems face by the rural people goes unreported.

The panellists includes former home minister RG Lyngdoh, former KSU president and NESO leader  Samuel Jyrwa, Sanjib Kakoty, Dr. Sylvanus Lamare and Anil Anand, General Secretary of the Press Club of India

Former journalist and legislator Manas Chaudhuri – who also graced the occasion as guest of honour- said members of the media do not often get a pat on the back for the service they render towards society. He, however, cautioned the journalists of the perils of sticking their neck out to make predictions during the elections. He asked, “If experts in the field of politics can make mistakes, who are we to make predictions about election results”

Chaudhuri alsosaid there is a need for research journalism and felt the media must to generate new ideas and focus on keeping the political class on the right track.- By Our Reporter
