SHILLONG, JULY 22: Meghalaya governor V Shanmuganathan on Wednesday told a delegation Joint Action Committee of the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong (JAC-SKRS), an umbrella body of the traditional headmen from Khasi and Jaintia Hills region, that the process of granting his assent to the village administration bills, which seeks to empower the traditional institutions and their heads, would still take some more time.
The JAC-SKRS members met the Governor.
“He (Governor) has assured us that he would soon give his assent to the VAB passed by both KHADC and JHADC,” JAC-SKRS president Dr W Kharshiing told newsmen after the meeting, which lasted for over two hours. He said, “The traditional headmen were also urged by the Governor to have patience since the process would take some more time.”
According to him, during the meeting, the issues related to bills of the two ADCs were discussed. “Overall, the meeting was a positive one and we have accepted the request of the Governor to wait for some more time till he assent both the bills,” Kharshiing said.
Earlier, a group led by former KHADC chief Adelbert Nongrum, who had staged a 16 days indefinite hunger strike to demand immediate approval of the KHAD (Village Administration) Bill, 2014 had proposed to hold a meeting with all the traditional heads, political parties and NGOs on July 25.
When asked about this , JAC-SKRS secretary R Blah informed that they only saw the proposal through media reports but till today they are yet to get any sort of formal invitation to attend the meeting which proposed to discuss on the VAB and the Ordinance of the State government.- By Our Reporter
