Shillong, Sep 17: Describing Mamata Banerjee’s threat of pulling out of the UPA government as an “argumentative decision” prevailing in noisy democracy, union power minister Veerappa Moily said that her decision will not result in a noisy administration.
Moily told reporters Monday, “One thing we should not forget the argumentative India we all live in, a noisy democracy but ultimately we (UPA) survive out of everything.” He said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi are committed in ushering the “fastest, sustainable and inclusive” growth in line with the UPA 12th Five Year plan slogan.
Moily almost warned, “No one could stop us from achieving development in the 11th plan and nobody can stop us now. UPA II is a well tested government.”
Defending UPA government decision to allow FDI in multi-brand retail, Moily said, “It is a strong decision that we have taken and this is going to transform the entire economic scenario in India.” He said the consumers should get competitive cheaper rate and the farmers should also get a matching price for their produce…”
Informing India’s purchasing power is one among the top three in the world now, Moily said, “We will be second by 2013… and this cannot be achieved by only raising of interests by the RBI. It has to be done by announcing the multi-brand retail and other strong decisions that we (UPA) have taken.”
On his objective of visit to Meghalaya, Moily assured Meghalaya an additional 25 MW of power during the lean season from October till next monsoon to avoid load shedding that affected the students.
Moily held a review meeting with Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma and State power minister AT Mondal and later informed that the central government will provide 25 MW so as to make the students not to suffer during the winter (as they prepare for their exams). He also said that the Palatana project in Tripura is getting ready for generation by October, it will add up the power requirements of the state government.
Sanmga had projected a power requirement of 150-180 MW besides pressing for additional allocation of central share of power to the state.
During the review meeting, various problems facing the power generation and distribution sectors of the state were discussed and on ways to increase the power generation in the state. Moily was also updated on the status of the ongoing power generation projects and the bottlenecks faced by the government which needs to be taken to accelerate its implementation.
Moily’s had laid the foundation stone of the first Hydel Power Project to be executed by NEEPCO in East Khasi Hills district earlier during the day. The Rs 453 crore project is the first of its kind to be executed by the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited in the state after the government approved the execution in April last. Power-starved Meghalaya is assured of at least Rs 12 crore worth of power in a year after the project completion expected after 54 months, officials said.- By Our Reporter
