SHILLONG, JULY 28: The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) national president Dinesh Sharma today alleged the NDA-led government at the Centre for holding back Rs 27,000 crores meant for the farmers in the country.
Addressing newsmen at a press conference here in the city on Friday, Sharma said, “The Centre has to pay around 27,000 crores to the farmers.”
He further threatened that the Union will be compelled to stage a protest outside the Parliament if the Centre refused to pay the money to the farmers.
Accusing the Centre of discriminating the labour class, the union national chief said hundreds of labourers, farmers and poor people are committing suicide and ending their life but the government seems to be least bothered about it.
The INTUC further demanded that the Centre to provide life insurance of Rs 10 lakh besides medical facilities for the labour class of the country.
According to Sharma, labourers in the country should be registered for free at the labour commissioner’s office as it should be the responsibility of the government to takecare of the poor.
Slamming the Modi-led government over the flood situation in Assam which has thrown normal life out of gear recently, he said despite the suffering of the people in Assam, yet the Centre has failed to extend financial assistance to the state.
He said that the state of Assam has gone 20 years back in terms of development under the present BJP regime.
Meanwhile, INTUC national general secretary Mehbooob Hussain said that the Union would work harder to strengthen the Congress in the entire country to ensure that it comes back to power in 2019.
Earlier, the delegation which is on a visit to the Northeastern state also met top party functionaries of the Congress in the state.
