ULFA militant killed

TURA, APR 7: A suspected militant of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) independent was killed today in an encounter near Nokrek peak, along East and West Garo Hills. The encounter took place around 2:30 pm today.

Police also busted a joined camp of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and ULFA-I. The security forced recovered a sizeable number of arms and ammunition. Police said that it was a training camp of the outfit.

“The offensive started yesterday after we got information of the presence of a camp near Nokrek peak. According to our information, about 70 cadres of the two outfits were being trained in the camp. In the cross fire between the militants and our team, one cadre was killed”, said Davies Marak, East Garo hills SP informed.

Marak said that from appearance of the slain cadre it looks like that he belonged to ULFA-I. He is yet to be identified. “We also believe quite a few cadres were injured from the various blood trials on the ground, however no more bodies were recovered though search is still on”, Marak added.

Police believe that the spot was a major training camp of the outfits. One pistol, one airgun and an IED were recovered from the spot.

GNLA militants arrested

Meghalaya police on Tuesday arrested two Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadres, while they were waiting to collect ransom from Sankinigre village in South Garo Hills. Following the duo’s arrest – Sengkhal Sangma, 26 and Dominic Marak, 20- police raided GNLA area commander Heido’s camp at Dapgre near Sankinigre village.

At Heido’s camp, police and rebel exchanged fire though no one was arrested. The rebel took advantage of the habitation as police had to restrain and the militants managed to escape.- From Our Correspondent
