SHILLONG, DEC 29: The United Democratic Party (UDP) Jaintia Hills on Saturday expressed confidence that the party will perform well in the upcoming elections to the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) slated to be held on February 27, 2019.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the party, secretary of the party from West Jaintia Hills District Kitbok Nongtdu said, “Survey conducted has indicated that the party is having a better chance in the forthcoming elections from Jaintia Hills region.”

Informing that the party is proposing to field candidates in all the 29 seats, Nongtdu, who is also a candidate from Jowai Central, said that so far the party has announced nine candidates which include five from West Jaintia Hills and four from East Jaintia Hills.

Asked, the party leader while ruling out any possibility of having pre-poll alliance ahead of the district council polls, however said, “The party has decided to have a post poll alliance. We will work together with the ruling party in the state, the National People’s Party (NPP) after the elections.”

Earlier during the meeting, the party also elected new office bearers of the UDP Jowai North following the return of its sitting MDC Marki Mulieh to the party recently.

Mulieh, who was elected on a UDP ticket in the 2014 MDC elections had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and unsuccessfully contested the 2018 Assembly polls.

When asked, Mulieh said that he has decided to quit the BJP after seeing that the policies of the party were not acceptable to the people of the constituency and the state as a whole.

“Based on my supporters’ advice, I have decided to return to the UDP,” he told reporters while also expressing confidence that the decision would also enable him to retain his seat in the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, the secretary also announced that Mulieh is already the official candidate of the party since he being the lone ticket aspirant from the constituency.
