SHILLONG, FEB 25: The Mukul Sangma led Congress coalition government came under scratching attack from opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) over least allocation of fund by the 14th Finance Commission compared to other north eastern states.
UDP working president and legislator Jemino Mawthoh said, “We expressed our great disappointment at Meghalaya being awarded the least of only Rs 1,770 crores as compared to Nagaland Rs.18, 475 crores.”.
Mawthoh was of the opinion that the recommendation of the 14th Finance speaks volume of the inability of the state government to manage the affairs of the state. But, he added, it has come as no surprise to the state considering the gross financial mismanagement and lack of good governance which has really affected the financial health of the state.
Mawthoh predicted that with the new dispensation at the centre, the future of the state looks bleak and dim. He pointed out that during the UPA government, the chief minister returns from Delhi with a lot of money but now he comes back with guidelines wondering where it leave the people and the state.
The government needs to sit up and introspect as to where things went wrong, Mawthoh asserted. He said making tall claims that the state has made great strides in different areas has proven to be nothing but rhetoric.
Mawthoh said there is no real development as far as raising the standard of living of life of the people and accused the government of taking the people for a ride by mesmerizing them with activities which are superficial and unproductive involving huge financial spending while failing to address the issues of real development.
Mawthoh stated that the people of the state needs to know why the state has fallen so low in all spheres of development adding the government has to answer for the poor performance which does not augur well for Meghalaya.- By Our Reporter
