SHILLONG, FEB 26: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has slammed the opposition Congress for trying to insinuate the recent attack on the vehicle of a KSU leader by linking the incident to the elections.
Addressing the media here on Tuesday, UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh said there has been attempt by the Congress to insinuate the incident with him being the candidate of the party from Jaiaw constituency for the February 27-district council polls.
Miscreants had vandalised the vehicle (Nexa Baleno) belonging to the general secretary of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Donald V Thabah at Lower Mawprem soon after the loadshedding was imposed by the MeECL on Sunday morning.
Stating that it was not an isolated incident, Lyngdoh, who is also a former KSU president, said on the same day, a vehicle owned by the Rangbah Dong of Lumkshaid was also vandalised while a house in the area was also looted during the loadshedding hours.
“Under the cover of darkness, there have been criminal incidents taking place. Therefore you cannot link them to the elections,” he said.
Referring to the statement made by the opposition Congress, Lyngdoh said, “The attempt of the Congress to shift the blame to us is highly condemnable because acts of crimes are happening everyday and to link it to politics it is also highly irresponsible.”
“The insinuation by the Congress is also because they know that they are fighting a losing battle,” he added.
The former West Shillong legislator also reminded that he was also a victim of petrol bomb attack last year even as he lamented the situation in Mawprem due to the problem of drug menace. Lyngdoh further blamed the failure of the Congress for the power shortage in the state.
He said that the Congress had in 2007 signed MoUs for implementing different power projects and the same were scrapped after 10 years.
On the other hand, UDP Jaiaw constituency president Michael War said the party strongly condemned the people behind the attack on the KSU leader’s vehicle. He said the party has also urged the people to ensure a peaceful election because winning or losing will depend on the voters.
Meanwhile, UDP vice president Allantry F Dkhar also urged the KSU leader to file a police complaint on the incident to ensure the culprits behind the incident are brought to book.
