SHILLONG, JAN 10: Taking a dig at the Congress led coalition government of Mukul Sangma for failing to articulate the people’s aspirations that are reflected in the underdevelopment of the state in all the fronts, United Democratic Party (UDP) leaders said that the party is confident of making a comeback in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) even as they said that there will be welcoming changes for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat, which was won by the Congress during the last elections.
The UDP leaders expressed optimism of their party’s performance during the upcoming district councils elections and also the Lok Sabha polls during a public meeting held at Jalaphet, under Sutnga constituency in East Jaintia hills district on Thursday last.
The meeting was attended by the Nongthymmai legislator Jemino Mawthoh who is also the chairman of the Election Campaign Organizing Committee, prominent leaders of UDP Jaintia Hills District like Mihsalan Suchiang (Adviser), Michael Sayo, President UDP Jaintia Hills District, Kitbok Nongtdu Vice President UDP Jaintia Hills District, Welcome Dkhar MDC Khliehriat, Loma UDP probable candidate from Saipung, Giri Lamare Joint Secretary UDP Jaintia Hills and also Hopingstone Bareh Rangbah Shnong Jalaphet, Suklang Bareh Rangbah Dong Pyrdung besides others
The UDP leaders pulled up the Congress led coalition government over the poor road condition across the state, steep rise in poverty, unemployment, growing militancy, law and order problem, problem of illegal immigration and increased crime rates across the state.
The UDP leaders also said lack of good governance is reflected in bad planning and administration which obviously has led to deterioration of the state at all levels. The leaders said that they are hopeful there will be a sea change in the upcoming District Councils and Lok Sabha elections in the state and exudes confident over the party prospect of coming back with thumping majority in the MDC elections.
The UDP units in Jaintia hills district has already campaigning in the different parts of Jaintia hills for the upcoming MDC and MP Elections.
Speaker after speaker expressed their happiness at the overwhelming response the party is receiving from different parts of Jaintia hills and said that they are hopeful that the Jaintia hills districts, which once were a UDP bastion as it had won all the seven assembly seats in 1998, will vote for the party in large numbers.
The UDP is not only identifying and selecting candidates for the MDC elections in Jaintia hills but simultaneously holding public meetings ahead of its political rival Congress.
Thursday meeting of the UDP also elected office bearers for Sutnga constituency which include Hill Chyrmang as its president, Viting Bareh as vice president, James Dkhar as general secretary, Hem Chyrmang joint secretary besides others. The UDP Jaintia hills district will also hold public meetings at Nartiang and Sapung in the coming days.- By Our Reporter
