Shillong, January 21: Pursuing its demand for a CBI probe into the alleged nexus of chief minister Mukul Sangma and the militants outfit ANVC (B), the United Democratic Party (UDP) legislator Jemino Mawthoh met President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan, union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and BJP president Rajnath Singh on Tuesday and highlighted the politico- militants’ nexus in Meghalaya.
Mawthoh was accompanied by the North East Regional Forum (NERF) leaders consisting of former Assam chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Atul Bora, Manipur People’s Party (MPP) president, MNF adviser and People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) general secretary.
The UDP leader submitted a memorandum to the President seeking his intervention into the alleged claim of the ANVC( B) publicity secretary Ajaju R Marak , who since has left the outfit, claiming that the outfit had help Sangma to become the chief minister during the last term by garnering support of the Garo legislators.
The UDP memorandum said, “It is pertinent to appoint a thorough enquiry by the CBI on the covert political patronage provided by the government to the militants.” It said the specific claims of extending support to him (Mukul) to be elevated to the office of the CM cannot be simply rubbished and downplayed as a mere case of maligning the chief minister.
Chief minister Mukul Sangma, however, has denied the allegation made against him and said that this was an attempt to malign him as chief minister.
Mawthoh also told this website from Delhi that the President said he will look into the matter but also advised the UDP to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and also inform him. Mawthoh said that he had informed the President about the party communication to the Prime Minister.
Before meeting the President at around 6 pm, Mawthoh along with the NERF leaders had also met home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and submitted the memorandum demanding CBI inquiry into the whole allegation. Mawthoh said the delegation also met BJP president Rajnath Singh and apprised him of Ajaju R Marak claim.
The UDP memorandum said that the claim of the ANVC (B) deserves due attention and thorough investigation, since the chronology of events have vital links with the militants’ claims. The party also referred to the public appeal made by the detained Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA)’s chairman Champion R Sangma to support the Congress during the last assembly elections.
Mawthoh said that the all the leaders they had met took serious note of the appraisal they had made against Meghalaya chief minister and promised to look into the allegations. He said that the UDP has now been able to bring the politico-militants nexus to the national level and hopefully a CBI probe will be ordered. – By Our Reporter
