SHILLONG, DEC 10: The United Democratic Party (UDP) today voiced it support for a strong and effective Lokayukta in the state to check the menace of corruption.
“I do not see that there is a problem in introducing the Lokayukta in the coming winter session (of the state Assembly),” UDP chief Donkupar Roy told reporters here, while asserting that it should be a government Bill.
The UDP chief also took a dig at the government, wondering why it had failed to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the anti-graft legislation despite chief minister Mukul Sangma promising to do so. “We need a strong and effective act to counter corruptions in the state,” he asserted.
The Meghalaya Right to Information Movement (MRTIM) has been demanding the introduction of the Lokayukta Bill in the three-day Assembly session which begins tomorrow, but the government has preferred to keep mum about it.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Assembly Speaker has rejected the resolution submitted by the UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh to have a strong Lokayukta Act besides motion to discuss on CBI report on the anomalies in the appointment of teachers. The limited days sanctioned for the winter session has also irked many legislators in the state.
