UDP for post-poll alliance

SHILLONG, FEB 25: United Democratic Party (UDP) president Donkupar Roy hinted that the party will be proposing for a post-poll-alliance with the other regional parties to form the new executive committees in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).

Polling to the two ADCs concluded on Monday and counting will be held on February 27. As many as 212 candidates are in the fray for the KHADC and JHADC.

“All the regional parties need to be united to ensure that the Congress is weakened in Meghalaya,” Roy told reporters on Tuesday.

Roy said if the UDP  gets absolute majority in both the district councils, it would still like the regional parties like the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP), Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) and others to work together.

According to Roy, working with the Congress both at the state and district council level in the past was a compulsion for the party.

UDP altogether had fielded forty-five candidates for the 58 seats in the KHADC and JHADC. Roy further expressed confident that his party will get the magic-number to form the new executive committee in the KHADC.  “We are hoping to get maximum 15 seats in the KHADC,” he said.

In JHADC Roy, however, predicted that his party would win at least 10 seats.  He also claimed that the UDP already has an understanding with the independent candidates from Jaintia Hills.

Roy asserted that the party is clear that it will not seek alignment with the Congress party. – By Our Reporter
