SHILLONG, APR 28: As Meghalaya continue to reel under severe power crisis with load shedding hours getting longer with each passing days, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has demanded the resignation of the state power minister Clement Marak besides a probe into the escalating cost of the much hyped Myntdu- Leskha power project.
The UDP is also demanding that the state government immediately resolve the power crisis in the state.
The party will also hold a sit in demonstration at the additional secretariat parking lots on Tuesday to protest against the unprecedented frequent power cut that has hit across the state.
UDP legislator and working president Jemino Mawthoh told this website on Monday that the party will demand the resignation of Meghalaya power minister Clement Marak for failing to resolve the power crisis that has plagued the state and also ask for a probe at the escalating price of the much touted Myntdu-Leskha project.
Describing the power cut of 11 hours in Shillong as unprecedented, Mawthoh said that the party would like to know how the escalation cost of the Myntdu- Leskha power project has shot up from the initial Rs 390 crore to Rs 1300 crore. He said, “ The people of the state who are now facing the brunt of the unprecedented power cut has the right to know how the project cost has become so steep even as the power crisis is becoming worse.
Besides hitting the business community who directly depends on power supply for their businesses, the frequent power cut has the football enthusiasts in the state worried.
The FIFA world cup is slated to begin from June 12 and football fans are now getting jittery as they are not sure whether they will get to watch the matches of their favourite teams.
Freddy Nongrum, a fan of the Germany football team, said that as the government and the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) appears to be in a limbo with no clue on how to resolve the present power crisis, viewing of the football world cup might get truncated because of the shut down.
As Meghalaya is a football crazy state, the Football World Cup might just become the government nemesis if the power crisis continues to June- July.- By Our Reporter
