SHILLONG, MAY 21: The United Democratic Party (UDP) and a church leader on Thursday hit out the alleged insensitive attitude of the state government to the sentiments of the majority, demanding passing of village administration bill.

UDP leader and church leaders were also of the view that there is no harm for the government to clear the bill as it can always be amended.

“When the people of Khasi and Jaintia Hills region are singing in unison with the same voice why is it the government fails to facilitate the passing of the village administration bill,” UDP working president, Jemino Mawthoh questioned.

Mawthoh statement came a day after chief minsiter Mukul Sangma has directed examination of the ongoing agitations whether there is any malafied intention to create law and order problem in the state.

Mawthoh, who paid a visit to former KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum at the venue where he along with a youth supporter Goldy Warjri are staging their indefinite hunger strike on the issue, said, “People, majority of them felt that the administration bill is the only way to resolve the present issue faced by the traditional institutions and yet the state government chose not to understand their sentiments.”

Mawthoh further question when different political parties are making effort for resolving the issue, why is government = adamant.

The ongoing hunger strike protest by Nongrum and Warjri entered its sixth day, even as state government medical team is keeping a close watch on their health condition.

Mawthoh, also a legislator from Nongthymmai constituency, said, “It is unfortunate, it has been six days yet, the state government is not understanding and failed to show its seriousness to pass the bill.”

A church leader Rev PBM Basaiawmoit question what is the problem of the state government in accepting the village administration bill, when the Land Acquisition Act can be passed and amended by the Union government.

“We urged the government first pass the village administration bills of both KHADC and JHADC as any anomalies can always be corrected through amendments since no laws are perfectly drafted,” Basaiawmoit said.

The state government had said that some of the provisions of the proposed village administration bill are in conflict with the existing laws of the state and Centre.

On this, the church leader said, “Unless you put the administration bill into practice how can we say that it comes into conflict with any laws passed by the centre and state governments.”

He, however, said the fact is that the delay of the government to approve the bills is because of the interest it has in encroaching into the jurisdiction of the district council.- By Our Reporter
