UDP boss defends allocation of party ticket to Kazi

UDP president Donkupar Roy

Shillong, Oct 12: Expressing the party’s displeasure with the threat of its legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit who warned that he will be quitting the United Democratic Party (UDP) to protest over allotment of the party ticket to Dr MD Mizanur Kazi as he is a non-tribal, former chief minister and UDP president Donkupar Roy felt raking the issue of allotting party ticket to a non-tribal was beyond the realm of “practical reality.”

Justifying the allocation of the party ticket to Kazi for the Rajabala constituency, Roy said, “Our candidate from Rajabala is not an outsider. He is a genuine resident of our state and his candidature is approved by the central election committee.”

Rubbishing Basaiawmoit’s statement in a section of the press, Roy revealed that he is unhappy with the statements against the decision taken by the central leadership.

Basaiawmoit is the only sitting MLA who has not applied for the party ticket within the stipulated time frame set by the party. When questioned on this matter, Roy said, , “The party state election committee will meet again and if he does not adhere to the time frame that we fixed, our alternative is to look for another candidate.”

Roy also informed that the party will continue to be part of the Congress led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) government till the end of the term. By Our Reporter
